At the time of British colonization in the early 17th century, it was home to a dwindling (due to frequent slave-raiding missions by the Portuguese) population of Indigenous peoples; Arawaks and Caribs. In the latter part of the 17th century, this city became the hub for sugar production in the Caribbean, and, home to slaves from multiple countries in West Africa. this city gained independence from Britain in 1966, but, has remained part of the Commonwealth since then.
Much of this island’s history is akin to those of other Caribbean islands, but, each island has managed to form their own unique culture. Barbados is no exception. The islands are known as being the ‘land of the flying fish’, of which, makes up half of the national dish. It is also the birthplace of Rum, the Grapefruit, and the Crop Over Festival; a traditional harvest festival originally celebrated by slaves in the late 17th century and typically involving singing, dancing, and alcohol.
Overall, Barbados is the perfect destination; whether you wish to chill, drink, eat, or party!
