Colombia, the only country in the Americas named after Christopher Columbus, is a country situated in the North-Western part of South America. The vast majority of its people are Mestizo (of mixed European and Indigenous descent) with a substantial amount of minorities of European and African descent.
Colombia is the most populated of the Spanish-speaking countries of South America, and Bogota – the capital – is the most populous and largest city in the country. The country is also one of the most bio-diverse in the world; being second only to Brazil.
Coastal cities such as, Choco, Cartagena, and Cali; are home to the country’s largest Afro-Colombian populations. This country is said to have the fourth largest population of Black people in the Western hemisphere after Haiti, Brazil, and the USA. Many Black-Americans now flock to Colombia because of this.
Historically, Colombia is renowned for its coffee (due to its perfect climate for coffee beans), Pablo Escobar (cough), and ‘El Dorado’; the legendary ‘City of Gold’ made famous by Spanish explorers in the early 16th century. The legend arose due to Spaniards finding unfathomable amounts of Gold among the Indigenous communities. So much so, that they believed there had to exist a place of great wealth high in the Andes mountains. Although the ‘City of Gold’ was never found, the legend lives on ’til this day.
