Can the real Egyptologists please put their hands up?
We’ve all played the role of the aspiring Egyptologist at least one moment in our life. And why not? Egypt is perhaps the most archaeologically popular country in the world. Its geographical location on the planet, being just north of the Sahara, has allowed for the preservation of all its wonders for both archaeologists and visitors alike to bask in.
Pharaohs, Pyramids, the Nile, multiple temples and obelisks, and the Sphinx are just some of the many sights Egypt is known for. Not only that, but it holds a special place in our hearts due to being situated in the motherland.
As with many of our native lands, Egypt was passed from colonial power to power; who fought over its resources. This, and many other countries throughout the motherland; were pivotal in birthing science, art, and even spearheading the technology we have today. Because of the many settlers over the millennia, the genetic makeup of Egyptians has developed from being related (simply put) to Sudanic, Northeast African, and Afro-Asiatic genomes; to being influenced by Europeans, Middle-Easterns, and Euro-Asiatics. Upon arrival into Cairo you will either notice descendants of the latter, or, a predominance of darker complexions (typically in the south).
Aside from its complex history, modern Egypt has much to offer regarding its cuisine, culture, music, and customs. It is a place of magic and should be a definite contender on one’s bucket-list.
