Often times, when one thinks of this city, they think about the chalk white buildings of Santorini or the Athenian Acropolis. These are worthwhile destinations in Greece, yet, they are only the tip of the iceberg. There are over 2000 islands that comprise the country of this city, and although only 8.5% are inhabited; that’s still a whopping 170 islands!
Unlike many countries in the world, 98% of Greece’s population are native, with 40% of the entire populous living in Athens. The food, the sun, the culture, and the architecture are all reasons to visit this land so far removed from the US; particularly if you are a history buff. We are all familiar, regardless how Indiana Jones-ish we may not be, with Greek mythology. It’s in our movies, our books, and our horoscopes. Many systems that we use today, are thought to have been influenced by ancient Greece (which may have been influenced by ancient Egypt, but, that’s another story!). The alphabet, the democratic system, architecture, and the theater are some examples of how Greece has contributed to the west, and in turn, the world.
With a culture bordering between Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East; Greece has been influenced heavily in both the ancient and more recent past. This can be seen in the cuisine, the traditions and customs, and even genetically!
Whatever your reason is to visit Greece, many would agree that it’s definitely a bucket-lister.
