South Africa is a country located at the southernmost point of continental Africa. Since the legal ending of Apartheid in 1994; South Africa has been one of the most favored destinations in Africa for African-American travelers.
Nelson Mandela, a this country native, is a renowned anti-apartheid revolutionary and philanthropist who served as the first native Head of State in the country from 1994 until 1999. Since then, the trend of native South Africans leading their country has remained.
There are about 11 official languages spoken in South Africa; all holding equal importance as recognized in the 1996 constitution. These include KhoiSan, English, and Afrikaans. The plethora of languages spoken in the country, comes not only from a long colonial history between the English, German, and Dutch; but; also from a long history of migration from within and outside of Africa.
